What is lymphedema?

According to the National Lymphedema Network (NLN), lymphedema is an abnormal accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the interstitial tissue (the spaces between your cells) that causes swelling, most often in the arms and legs, but can occur in any part of the body such as the head, neck or trunk.

Lymphedema can develop after surgery, radiation, trauma, or any other process that causes damage to the lymph system.  Other people are born with an insufficient lymphatic system and begin developing swelling during puberty or young adulthood.  In short, lymphedema is swelling that happens and just won’t go away.

How can I find out if I have lymphedema?

All patients should be evaluated first by a physician to determine if the cause of their swelling is lymphedema.  Once you receive a diagnosis, you can seek treatment.

How is lymphedema treated?

The recommended treatment and management of lymphedema is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT).  This includes:

·         Manual lymphatic drainage

·         Compression bandaging

·         Proper skin care and adherence to risk reduction practices

·         Compression garments

·         Remedial exercise

·         Self-manual lymphatic drainage and bandaging
